David White Trafford was born in Blaine, Maine, in 1916 and died in Florida in 1993. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1939 with an A.B. Degree, Summa Cum Laude, in history. He received both his M.A. and Ph. D. degrees in history from Indiana University in 1940 and 1947. He joined the University of Maine faculty teaching history and was appointed chair of the University of Maine Study Abroad Program in 1965. He retired in 1979. The University of Maine saw approximately 1,000 students and alumni serve in World War I and 3,900 serve in World War II. Both wars had a strong effect on the university and its students; the desire to honor those who had served and to memorialize those who had died led to various activities on campus.
